Sandy's Corner

May 2, 2008

The Kids Conservation Roundup was a big success (photos attached).  Three hundred seventy-five 4th graders attended from 7 counties and learned about many aspects of conservation.  The event was put on by the Northwest Kansas Conservation and Environmental Alliance.  The student’s sessions included range management, the water cycle, wetlands, non-point source pollution, history, skins and skulls, reptiles and amphibians, forestry, recycling, just to name a few.  Seventy-four students attended from Goodland.  They made me very proud.

I attended Board Capacity Training in Salina on April 7th & 8th sponsored by the State Association of Resource Conservation and Development.  There were about 25 of us from across the State in attendance.  It was one of the best training sessions I have attended in a long time.  The two day training was held at the National Guard Armory.

We have had our tree day for this year.  Tree sales were down somewhat this year but we distributed over 1000 trees.

You may not believe this, but I actually enjoy having the Auditor come.  Mr. VonFeldt spent all day Thursday going over the District’s records, minutes, bookwork etc for 2007.  We got a very good report card.

The farming season is getting in full swing so have a very safe and successful month.

Spring is in the air. I'm sure you've all noticed a little smoke in the air as well. The CRP burning well be over April 15th. It's certainly been a new challenge & somewhat stressful period for all of us. Safety is of the utmost importance. The deadline is fast approaching to order trees. Keep watching the website for a delivery date. Update on the Kids Conservation Roundup. There are over 400 4th graders form Thomas. Logon, Rawlins, Wallace, Decatur, Cheyenne, and Sherman counties. Watch for pictures after the event. Happy Easter!!

Congratulations to all of the award winners this year!!  Our annual meeting and conservation edition published by the Goodland Star-News has come and gone for another year.  Our entertainment this year was outstanding.  The Mangus Family sang for us (including Danny, Devin and Dani.  They were great.   Once again the students did an outstanding job on their conservation entries.   Thanks to all who participated in making it a special evening.

Stop by and talk to me about the State Cost Share Program.  We still have some funds available in both the Non-Point Source Program and the District Needs Program.
